Twice has curly brown hair, a rusty-orange vest full of pockets, and a round magnifying glass that she keeps close. She is the leader of the SecondLook crew, and she has one rule she never breaks.
Twice never says "impossible" until she has looked twice.
One afternoon, a girl named Lena is stuck on a maze. A little star sits in the corner, and every path she tries runs into a wall.
"It's impossible," Lena sighs, dropping her pencil. "The star is walled off. There's no way."
Twice sits down beside her. "Maybe," she says gently. "But have you looked twice?"
"I looked!"
"You looked once," says Twice with a smile. "Once is when you look the way you always look. Twice is when you slow down and look a different way. Want to try it with me?"
Lena picks up her pencil again. This time she starts from the star instead of the start, tracing backwards, slowly. Her pencil goes along the top, down a skinny little gap she hadn't noticed... and suddenly it joins up.
"There's a way!" Lena gasps. "It was there all along!"
"It usually is," says Twice, tucking her magnifying glass away. "The first look sees what you expect. The second look sees what's really there."
That's Twice's brave idea.
Before you say impossible, look twice - a second look can find the way.
A grown-up can play too! Hide a small toy somewhere in a room. The seeker looks once, then says "Look twice!" and searches again, slowly and differently, like under things, behind things, and up high. Talk about what changed the second time.
Lena finishes the maze, and a big warm feeling fills her up. It isn't just that she found the path. It's that she found out she can un-stick herself. Next time something looks impossible, she knows what to do. Take a breath. Look twice.
