Vivid spread his shimmering tail, told one absolutely gripping tale, and then — gently — took it apart. He was a theatrical peacock, all iridescent blues and greens, and no one alive knew better how a good story dazzles.

"Listen," he said to a trembling dormouse. "Last spring a mouse crossed the Big Meadow and a hawk chased her the whole way — talons out, wind screaming, a hair from doom the entire crossing." The dormouse was shaking by the end. "So the meadow's a death-trap! No mouse can ever cross it!"

"Isn't that a gripping story?" Vivid folded his tail. "Now — how many mice cross the Big Meadow every day?" The dormouse didn't know. "Hundreds. Quietly, safely, boringly. No hawk, no drama, no tale worth telling." He fanned one bright feather. "'Hundreds crossed and nothing happened' makes no story at all. The one terrifying chase makes an unforgettable one. So the dramatic case burns itself into your memory and the hundred safe ones leave no trace — and then your mind does something sneaky. It measures how common a thing is by how easily an example springs to mind. That's the trick. The chase is easy to recall precisely because it was rare and vivid, and your mind reads that easiness as 'this happens all the time.'"

The dormouse blinked. "So the chase was real, but not the usual?"

"Real, and rare, and memorable — which is exactly what fools you," Vivid said. "Memorability isn't frequency. A thing can be seared into every mind and still almost never happen. One dazzling case is data of one. The pattern lives in the boring hundreds you'll never remember."

He had learned it by dazzling himself. As a chick he'd seen one spectacular shooting star and become convinced the sky rained stars nightly — that single sight so vivid it felt like the truth of the whole heavens. Night after night he waited for the downpour, saw only ordinary quiet stars, and felt cheated, foolish, sure his own eyes had lied. His grandmother, a calm old peahen, had sat with him beneath the plain sky. "Your eyes didn't lie. You saw one dazzling thing and your heart mistook dazzling for usual — the oldest confusion there is." She'd nodded at the still stars. "One vivid moment prints itself on you; a thousand ordinary nights leave no mark. So the vivid one feels like the whole truth even when it's the lone exception. The more a thing grips you, the harder you must ask: is this the pattern, or just the one I can't forget? Count the quiet nights on purpose — they're the real story, they're just too dull to remember on their own."

Vivid started asking it every time a story seized him. And the dazzle stopped ruling him: a gripping tale became one case, held beside the quiet pattern.

Later the dormouse crept back. "But the vivid stories feel so true. If I don't trust the one that grips me, what do I trust?"

"The count you had to work to gather," Vivid said. "The pattern never grabs you by the collar — that's exactly why it's trustworthy. The story that floods you with feeling is doing a story's job, which is not the same as telling you how often. Feel the story fully — then set it, honestly, beside the hundred you didn't feel." He let a feather fall. "Trust the tale to move you. Trust the tally to inform you. Never let the first do the second's job."

The dormouse sat with it, and the gripped, breathless certainty softened into something steadier — the knowledge that a pounding heart is a fact about the story, not about the world. Vivid watched the fright drain out of him and felt the quiet gladness under all his glitter: not the thrill of the dazzling tale, but the settled calm of a mind that could be moved by a story and still see past it to the pattern.

"One story, or the whole picture," he murmured, and dimmed his tail to an ordinary, honest blue.
