Cog the Beaver Draws the Machine

Cog is a broad, steady, sharp-eyed beaver, and Cog is an engineer to the tip of her flat tail. Beavers build, after all - and what Cog builds best is understanding. Give her the most baffling, chaotic little money-making contraption in the world, all whirring gears and climbing numbers, and Cog will do one calm thing before she touches a single lever. She’ll draw it.

“You can’t steer what you can’t see,” Cog says, unrolling a wide sheet of paper. “And most machines are a blur until you draw them the right way. So let me show you the right way.”

Here’s her trick, and it works on almost anything that grows. Cog looks at the whirring machine and asks three questions. First: what’s the pile? What’s the thing that builds up - the coins, the treasure, the score? She draws that as a box in the middle. That box is the stock - the amount you have right now, sitting in a pile.

Then: what flows in? What pours coins into the pile? She draws an arrow going into the box, like water into a tub. That’s an inflow. And finally: what flows out? What drains the pile back down - costs, spending, upkeep? She draws an arrow leaving the box. That’s an outflow.

And suddenly - this is the genuinely wonderful part - the baffling machine isn’t baffling anymore. It’s a tub with a tap pouring in and a drain letting out, and a pile in the middle that rises when the tap beats the drain and falls when the drain beats the tap. That picture is called a stock-and-flow diagram, and it is one of the most powerful ways ever invented to understand anything that changes over time.

“Look what the drawing tells you,” Cog says, tapping the paper. “Want the pile to grow? You have two choices, and only two: pour more in, or let less out. That’s it. The whole confusing machine, and it comes down to that one clear picture.” Money, water in a bath, the number of fish in a pond, the mess in your bedroom - all of it is stocks and flows, piles and the arrows that fill or drain them.

The reason engineers like Cog swear by drawing it is that a diagram doesn’t lie or confuse. Numbers flying past on a screen are hard to hold in your head. But a box with an arrow in and an arrow out - you can see that, all at once, and once you can see it, you can start to steer it.

That is Cog’s calm, clear-eyed idea.

Before you tinker with a machine, DRAW it - what flows in, what piles up, what flows out. See the loop, steer the loop.

A grown-up can play too! Pick something that builds up in real life - money in a jar, water in a bath, laundry in a basket - and sketch it Cog’s way: a box for the pile, an arrow in, an arrow out. Then ask together: “To grow the pile, do we pour more in or let less out?” Notice how the little drawing makes the answer obvious.

When the tycoon machine is finally drawn out clean and clear on Cog’s wide sheet - pile in the middle, tap pouring coins in, drain letting costs out - Cog sits back with a satisfied thump of her tail. “There,” she says. “It was never really complicated. It was just never drawn. Now we can build something.”
