In the echoing stone hall behind WaveForge, a young bat hung upside-down and did something that seemed like magic but was just plain physics: she saw the whole dark room by listening to her own sound come back.

Rebound was small and velvet-winged, with big listening ears, and she understood echoes better than anyone. A young mouse blinked in the dark. "How do you not bump into things?" he asked. "You can't even SEE in here!" Rebound clicked a tiny sound, waited a heartbeat, and darted around a pillar she'd never touched. "I don't need to see," she said. "I LISTEN. I make a little sound, and when it hits that pillar, it doesn't just stop — it BOUNCES back to my ears. The bounce is an echo, and the echo tells me the pillar is there, and how far." She clicked again. "A wave that hits a wall doesn't just stop. It bounces back. That bounce is an echo, and you can use it."

The mouse squeaked. "So you SEE with echoes?"

"With bounced sound, yes," Rebound said, delighted. "It's not magic, and it's not a bat superpower — it's just what waves DO. Any wave — sound, light, a ripple in water — bounces off a wall it can't pass through. The sooner the echo comes back, the closer the wall. Fast echo, close wall. Slow echo, far wall. That's the whole trick."

Rebound had learned about bouncing sound as a pup.

The first time she flew in the dark, she panicked — she couldn't see, kept bumping into things, and was sure she was simply blind and helpless, that the dark was an enemy she'd never beat.

Her mother, an old bat with worn soft ears, hung beside her. "You're trying to SEE in the dark," she said, "and you never will — but you don't need to. Listen." She clicked, and cocked her head. "I make a sound, and it flies out, hits the cave wall, and comes BOUNCING back to me. That returning bounce — that echo — is a message from the wall telling me exactly where it is." She clicked toward a near rock, then a far one. "Hear it? The near rock's echo comes back fast. The far one's takes longer. My ears read the time, and I 'see' the whole cave in bounced sound." She nuzzled the pup. "The dark isn't your enemy. Your own voice, bounced back, is your light."

Rebound started clicking and listening, and the dark cave unfolded around her in echoes — near walls, far walls, the shape of everything, all from sound bouncing home. The blind, helpless feeling turned into a bright, capable wonder. She wasn't helpless in the dark. She just hadn't known that her own sound, bounced back, could show her everything.

When she was twelve, Rebound flew to WaveForge, where Sonic, her mentor, asked, "What happens when a wave hits a boundary it can't pass?"

Rebound didn't answer with a speech. She clicked a small sound across the hall, and it came bouncing back a heartbeat later. "It rebounds," she said. "A wave that hits a wall doesn't vanish — it bounces back as an echo. And that echo carries information: how far the wall is, told by how long the bounce takes." She clicked toward a near pillar, then a far one. "Close things answer fast; far things answer slow. It's how I fly in the dark, how a canyon shouts back, how sonar finds the sea floor — all the same simple bounce."

Sonic's eyes crinkled warmly. "Some think echolocation is a mysterious sense," Sonic said.

"It's just listening to sound bounce back," Rebound said. "Physics, not magic." Sonic smiled. "Then come in," Sonic said. "WaveForge needs someone who reads the world by echoes."

In her workshop one afternoon, a frustrated young shrew clicked and shouted, trying to copy her.

"I've been shouting for AGES," the shrew said, "and I can't 'see' anything with echoes. I must just not have the special power. It's hopeless."

"It's not a special power, and it's not hopeless," Rebound said gently. "It's just a skill of NOTICING the bounce. Let's do it slow." She led the shrew to a wall. "Clap once — sharp — and go completely silent, and LISTEN for the clap to come back." The shrew clapped, listened... and heard, faintly, his clap return a moment later. "There!" Rebound said. "That's the bounce. Now — step closer to the wall, clap, and listen again." The shrew did, and the echo came back FASTER. "See? Closer wall, faster echo. You don't need bat ears. You just need to clap, hush, and notice the bounce come home."

The shrew's eyes widened. "So it's not a magic sense. It's just... clap, listen, and the bounce tells you where things are?"

"That's the whole craft," Rebound said. "Any wave bounces off a wall. Sound, light, ripples — all of them. Once you know a wave bounces back, echoes stop being spooky and start being useful. Ships find the sea floor this way. Doctors see inside you this way. Same simple bounce as your clap in this hall."

Later, as the hall grew quiet, the shrew came back, clapping softly and listening to the returns, grinning.

"It's kind of wonderful," the shrew said, "that my own clap coming back can tell me where a wall is. I thought echoes were just spooky noises."

Rebound settled beside him, hanging comfortable.

"So many people think echoes are spooky or magic," she said, "or that reading them is a special power you're born with." She clicked, and the hall answered. "But it's the plainest physics there is: a wave hits a wall it can't pass, and bounces back. That's ALL an echo is. And once you know that, you can USE it — the time the bounce takes tells you the distance, every time." She wiggled her ears. "There's a bright, clicking-into-place feeling in that — the moment a spooky mystery turns out to be a simple, useful rule. Not magic, not a superpower — just a wave, bouncing home, carrying a message about the world."

The shrew nodded, clapping and listening, and Rebound watched the hopeless, no-special-power feeling ease into that bright, capable wonder she'd found as a pup in the dark cave — the warm gladness of a young learner who's discovered that an echo is no mystery at all, just a wave bouncing back, ready to show you the world if you clap and listen.
