BecauseTots — for grown-ups

BecauseTots is a first "a good because" game for ages 3–5. There's nothing to read, no score, and no way to lose — just Bruno the little elephant and his favourite question, "but why?" Here is the whole game:

  • Bruno asks "but why?" — Bruno the little elephant points at something — a bird, some ice, a warm cookie — and asks the toddler’s favourite question: “But WHY?” Everything is spoken aloud, so no reading is needed.
  • Two friends each say a "because" — One friend gives a because that tells you something NEW — “because it has big wings!”, “because it’s frozen water!”. The other just says the same thing back — “because it’s a bird”, “because it feels cold”.
  • Tap the because that tells you something new — Your child taps the friend whose because adds a new idea. A wrong tap never loses; Bruno gently says “that one just says it back again — which because tells us something new?” and points back.
  • Bruno lights up! — The good because lights up, and Bruno says the little lesson out loud: a good because tells you something new. Five happy discoveries make a game.

What it's building

The very first reasons-and-evidence habit: the idea that a good "because" tells you something new — it adds a reason you didn't already have — instead of just saying the same thing back ("it's a bird because it's a bird"). That going-in-a-circle answer is the earliest form of a grown-up thinking slip called begging the question. Noticing "did that tell me something new?" is the gentlest beginning of the thread that runs through our whole thinking family, all the way up to spotting a bias or a wobbly argument.

How sure are the scientists?

Solid. Even before they can read, young children already prefer an explanation that gives them new information over one that is circular or empty (Baum, Danovitch & Keil; Mills). BecauseTots simply gives that budding instinct a happy little workout.

Good to know: the game always has exactly one friend whose because tells you something new, so there's always a right answer and no one gets stuck. Everything runs on your device — there is no account, no tracking, and nothing about your child's play leaves it. BecauseTots makes no exam or skill claim; it's a gentle first game about good reasons.
