Graphs & Data Displays
📋 What it is
Bar graphs, pictographs and line plots each show data in a way that fits the question.
🗣️ Coach says
Different displays tell different stories. Bar graphs compare groups; pictographs use symbols (each = a count); line plots show how often each value appears. Pick the display that makes your point clearest.
🧠 Memory hook
Bar = compare groups. Pictograph = a symbol per count. Match the display to the question.
😂 Giggle
Why was the statistics teacher always calm?
Because she knew things would eventually return to the mean!
😲 Whoa!
The very first bar chart was drawn in 1786 — before that, people only listed numbers in tables.
✅ Quick check: A pictograph shows 🍎 = 2 apples, and a row has 3 apples pictured. How many apples is that?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
6 — each symbol stands for 2, and 3 × 2 = 6.
In a pictograph you multiply the symbol count by its key value.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Draw a pictograph of your week's screen time using one symbol per 30 minutes.
