Mean, Median, Mode & Range
📋 What it is
Mean is the average, median the middle, mode the most common; range is the spread.
🗣️ Coach says
Four ways to summarise a pile of numbers. Mean: add them all, share equally. Median: sort and take the middle. Mode: the most frequent. Range: biggest minus smallest. Each answers a slightly different question.
🧠 Memory hook
Mean = share out. Median = middle (SORT first!). Mode = most. Range = high − low.
😂 Giggle
What did the normal distribution say at the party?
"I'm the bell of the ball!"
😲 Whoa!
Average human body temperature was set at 37°C in the 1860s — but modern studies suggest we've actually cooled slightly since then.
✅ Quick check: Find the mean of 4, 6, 8.
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
6 — add to 18, then divide by 3.
The mean is the total shared equally among the count of values.
🪄 Trick question: If you add a huge outlier, which changes more — the mean or the median?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
The mean — one extreme value drags the average; the median barely moves.
The median only cares about position, not the size of extreme values.
