Mission 5 of 16

Statistical Variability

📋 What it is

Variability is how spread out data is; two sets can share a mean but differ wildly in spread.

🗣️ Coach says

The average alone can hide a lot. Two classes can have the same mean score but one is all near the middle and the other is all extremes. Variability (range, spread) tells you how consistent the data is.

🧠 Memory hook

Same mean ≠ same data. Spread (variability) tells you how CONSISTENT the numbers are.

😂 Giggle

Why did the outlier get excluded from the data set?
It just didn't fit in!

😲 Whoa!

Two cities can have the same average temperature, yet one is mild all year and the other swings from freezing to scorching — same mean, huge variability.

✅ Quick check: Two teams average 10 points, but one scores 9-10-11 and the other 2-10-18. Which is more variable?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Compare two dice-roll sets you make: do they have the same spread even if the average matches?

🤸 Brain break: Spread-hands: hold hands close ("low spread"), then fling them wide ("high spread!").
