About CognateForge
CognateForge is a comparative-linguistics word game. Cognates are words in different languages that share an ancestor — English mother, Spanish madre, French mère, Hindi mātā, and Ukrainian maty all go back to one ancient word. Your job is to trace them home, and to notice the false friends — look-alikes that are not related.
Why "the Meaning Rule"?
The best study of expert word-game players found something surprising: playing competitive word games a lot trains you to recognise letter patterns — but not what words mean. CognateForge is built to fix exactly that: a word only counts once you've shown you know its meaning. The game rewards understanding a word — and understanding where it came from — not just spelling it.
The seven languages
The families reach across English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and (in romanized form) Hindi and Ukrainian — the languages this site supports. Seeing that three, tres, trois, tīn, and try are all the same ancient number is the whole point: languages that look distant are often cousins.
What it's good for (and what we don't claim)
CognateForge is good practice for vocabulary across languages, word roots and morphology, and the idea that words have histories. It is not a brain-training program, and we make no claim it raises IQ or test scores. Every etymology here is a well-established one — an honest, calm way to meet words and their families.
