Hán-Việt: one word, four readings

Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese each borrowed thousands of words from Chinese, mostly for school, science and public life. In Vietnamese these readings are called Hán-Việt. The word for university is written 大學 in all of them and read đại học, dàxué, daigaku and daehak.

Each board below hides three of these words. Every family has one Vietnamese reading and two others. As on the main board, you show you know a word's meaning before you can group it. Tap 🔊 to hear each word in its own language.

Mandarin is written in pinyin, Japanese in Hepburn romanization and Korean in Revised Romanization. The sounds to listen for are the old endings -k, -t and -m: some languages kept them and some lost them.
