Round 2 of 16

The Forced Capture

📋 What it is

If a capture is available, you MUST take it — capturing is not optional in standard draughts.

🗣️ Coach says

This is the rule that surprises everyone: if you CAN jump, you HAVE to jump. You do not get to just slide a piece to safety instead. Smart players use this — they set a trap that forces the opponent into a capture that loses.

🧠 Memory hook

See a jump? You are forced to take it. No choosing "no thanks".

😂 Giggle

Why do checkers only move on the dark squares?
Because they like to keep things diagonal!

😲 Whoa!

Because captures are forced, a checkers player can plan three moves ahead knowing exactly what the opponent will be COMPELLED to do — the rule turns a jump into a lever.

✅ Quick check: You would rather develop a piece, but you have a legal jump available. What must you do?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Set up one piece that can jump and one that cannot. Confirm the rule: the jumping piece is the one you must move.

🤸 Brain break: Magnet-pull: hold a hand out and let it be "pulled" toward an imaginary jump — you cannot resist it.
