Opposition
📋 What it is
Opposition is a face-off where the player NOT to move controls the key squares — a core endgame weapon.
🗣️ Coach says
When two lone kings (or a king and a man) stand facing each other with one square between, whoever does NOT have to move is in charge — the mover must give way. Winning the opposition means arranging it so the OTHER player is forced to step aside first.
🧠 Memory hook
Stand off, one gap between. The one who must move is the one who loses ground.
😂 Giggle
Why did the trap look like a gift?
Because a smart player leaves a piece as bait to win two!
😲 Whoa!
Opposition is the exact same endgame idea in chess king-and-pawn endings — one geometric trick that transfers straight across two different games.
✅ Quick check: In an opposition face-off with one square between the kings, who is better off?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The player who does NOT have to move — the one forced to move must step aside and give up ground.
Opposition hands the advantage to the side not on the move.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Set two kings a square apart and take turns being "forced to move." Feel how the mover always yields.
