Double-Corner Fortress
📋 What it is
The double corner is the safest refuge on the board; a lone king often draws by hiding there.
🗣️ Coach says
Each side has a "double corner" (two dark squares tucked together). A single king trapped elsewhere can lose, but reach the double corner and it becomes a fortress — the attacker often cannot force it out, so the game is drawn.
🧠 Memory hook
When you are down to one king, run for the double corner and dig in.
😂 Giggle
Why did tempo matter in checkers?
Because forcing your opponent to move first can win the whole endgame!
😲 Whoa!
Endgame books devote whole chapters to the double corner — knowing this ONE safe square has saved countless "lost" games as draws.
✅ Quick check: Why does a lone king head for the double corner when defending?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
The double corner is the hardest square to be forced out of, so a lone king there can often hold a draw.
The double corner's geometry gives the defender the most escape squares.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Put one king in the double corner and try to trap it with two enemy kings — see how hard it is.
