To read what someone feels, scientists don’t just look at the face. They stack up clues — and some clues are much stronger than others. Here’s the ladder, from the weakest clue at the bottom to the strongest at the top.

   the BEST clue of all — you don’t have to guess; you can just ask, kindly.

   What just happened

   usually the biggest clue — the situation sets what the feeling is likely to be.

   The voice

   stronger still — tone, speed and volume carry a lot of the feeling.

   The body

   stronger — posture and hands often tell you more than the face (Aviezer’s experiments).

   The face

   the WEAKEST clue on its own — the same face can mean many different things (Barrett 2019).
