For grown-ups

DecodeDojo is a private decoding track for teens, ages 15–18. Long words are short words stacked together, so it teaches two ways to take them apart: by syllable and by meaning.

There are four practice rooms. Syllables: find the vowels, then find the break. Syllable types: six patterns (closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, consonant-le) tell you how a vowel sounds. Word parts: beginnings and endings like non-, re-, -able and -ment carry meaning. Read: short passages in the shape of a driver’s handbook, a pay stub, a lease and a ballot measure. Three reading cases (a receipt, a handbook, a pay stub) sit under Cases.

There are no levels and no timer. Ten minutes is a good session.

What it never does

  • No ads and nothing to buy (see the privacy page).
  • No account needed: what is practised stays in this browser, on this device.
  • No streaks, timers to beat, points to chase or leaderboards.
  • No chat, and nothing anyone types is sent anywhere.

We describe what DecodeDojo is designed to practise (ages 15–18). We do not claim it raises test scores.
