For grown-ups

DuskTales is bedtime math. You read a short story aloud (or tap to hear it), then your child picks one of three doors — Wee for ages 3 to 5, Little for 6 to 7, Big for 8 to 9 — and you ask the one question behind it. Your line is printed under the door, so you never have to invent the math.

Once or twice a week is plenty; the story ends with the lantern going out, and there is no next story button. A wrong answer opens the door anyway, and the story shows the counting together. This design follows the published Bedtime Math study (Berkowitz and colleagues, 2015), which found the biggest gains for children of math-anxious parents; we describe the design, we do not claim the same results.

What it never does

  • No accounts, no ads, no tracking — anything kept stays on this device.
  • No streaks, timers to beat, points to chase or leaderboards.
  • No chat, and nothing anyone types is sent anywhere.

We describe what DuskTales is designed to practise. We do not claim it raises test scores.
