Fraction Basics
📋 What it is
A fraction shows equal parts of a whole: the bottom (denominator) is how many equal parts, the top (numerator) is how many you have.
🗣️ Coach says
A fraction is just a way to talk about parts of one thing. The bottom number tells you how many equal slices the whole was cut into; the top tells you how many of those slices you’re holding. Equal slices matter — uneven pieces aren’t fractions.
🧠 Memory hook
Bottom = how many pieces the whole is cut into. Top = how many you took.
😂 Giggle
Why did the fraction go to the doctor?
Because it was feeling improper!
😲 Whoa!
The line in a fraction is over 900 years old — it came from Arabic mathematicians and was spread through Europe in the 1200s.
✅ Quick check: A pizza is cut into 8 equal slices and you eat 3. Write that as a fraction and say what each number means.
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
3/8 — the 8 is the equal slices the whole was cut into, the 3 is how many you ate.
The denominator names the equal parts of the whole; the numerator counts the parts taken.
🪄 Trick question: Is a pizza cut into 4 pieces where one piece is huge and three are tiny showing “fourths”?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
No — fractions need EQUAL parts; unequal pieces aren’t fourths at all.
The whole point of a denominator is equal-sized parts.

Fold a piece of paper into 4 equal parts, shade 1, and write the fraction. Then fold a fresh one into 4 UNequal parts — why isn’t a shaded piece “1/4”?
