Mixed & Improper
📋 What it is
A mixed number (1½) and an improper fraction (3/2) are two ways to write the same amount more than one whole.
🗣️ Coach says
When you have more than a whole, you can write it two ways: a mixed number (a whole plus a bit) or an improper fraction (a top bigger than the bottom). They’re equal — you just convert by trading wholes for pieces.
🧠 Memory hook
Improper → mixed: how many whole groups fit, with the leftover on top.
😂 Giggle
What did 1/2 say to 2/4?
"Stop copying me — we're equivalent and you know it!"
😲 Whoa!
Chefs and carpenters usually prefer mixed numbers (2¾ cups) because they’re easier to picture than 11/4.
✅ Quick check: Change 7/2 into a mixed number.
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
3½ — 2 goes into 7 three times (3 wholes) with 1 left over, so it’s 3 and 1/2.
Dividing the numerator by the denominator gives the wholes; the remainder stays over the denominator.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Write 2¾ as an improper fraction, then check by drawing 2¾ pizzas and counting quarter-slices (you should get 11).
