Ratios & Proportions
📋 What it is
A ratio compares two quantities; equal ratios form a proportion, which you solve by scaling both parts the same way.
🗣️ Coach says
A ratio is a fraction in disguise — 2:3 is like 2/3. A proportion says two ratios are equal, and you solve it the same way you make equivalent fractions: scale both sides by the same factor.
🧠 Memory hook
Ratio = a fraction comparing two things. Proportion = two equal ratios, scaled the same.
😂 Giggle
Why did the common denominator get invited to every party?
Because it brings everyone together!
😲 Whoa!
Recipes, maps, and mixing paint all run on proportions — double a recipe by scaling EVERY ingredient by the same factor, or it tastes wrong.
✅ Quick check: If 2 cups flour need 3 eggs, how many eggs for 6 cups of flour?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
9 eggs — 6 cups is 3× the flour, so scale the eggs by 3 too (3×3=9).
A proportion keeps the ratio equal by scaling both quantities by the same factor.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Find a recipe and rewrite it for double the people — scale EVERY ingredient by 2 and notice the ratios stay the same.
