Fractions in Real Life
📋 What it is
Fractions show up in cooking, money, time, and measuring — reading them right means reading the WHOLE they refer to.
🗣️ Coach says
Fractions aren’t just worksheet numbers. Half an hour, a quarter of your allowance, ¾ cup of flour — each fraction only makes sense once you know what “one whole” is. Same fraction, different wholes, very different amounts.
🧠 Memory hook
Always ask “a fraction OF what?” — the whole changes everything.
😂 Giggle
Why did the reciprocal flip out?
Because someone turned it upside down!
😲 Whoa!
“Half” of a small pizza and “half” of a giant pizza are both 1/2 — but you’d much rather have half the big one. The whole matters!
✅ Quick check: Half of your $10 allowance vs half of your friend’s $6 — are both “1/2”? Are they equal amounts?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Both are 1/2, but the amounts differ ($5 vs $3) because the wholes differ.
A fraction’s value depends on the size of the whole it refers to.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Find three fractions in your kitchen or day (½ cup, ¼ hour, ⅓ of a bar). For each, name the whole it’s a fraction OF.
