Check, Checkmate & Stalemate
📋 What it is
Check = the king is attacked and must respond. Checkmate = attacked with no escape (you win). Stalemate = no legal move but NOT in check (it’s a draw).
🗣️ Coach says
The whole game aims at one thing: trap the enemy king. But watch the trap — cornering a king with NO legal move and NO check is stalemate, a draw. Think twice before the final move.
🧠 Memory hook
Mate = king attacked + can’t escape. Stalemate = can’t move + NOT attacked = draw.
😂 Giggle
Why did the checkmate end the argument?
Because when the king can't escape, the game is simply over!
😲 Whoa!
A player who is completely winning can throw it all away with one careless move that stalemates the lone enemy king — a draw snatched from a win.
✅ Quick check: Your opponent’s king is NOT in check, but it has no legal move and no other piece can move. What’s the result?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Stalemate — a draw, not a win.
Checkmate needs the king to be IN check with no escape; “stuck but safe” is the classic half-point trap.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Set a king alone in a corner and try to give check three different ways with a single queen (without stalemating it).
