Opening Principles
📋 What it is
Open well: control the centre, develop knights and bishops, and castle your king to safety — don’t move the same piece twice or bring the queen out too early.
🗣️ Coach says
You don’t need to memorise openings — you need the PRINCIPLES. Grab the centre, get your pieces out, tuck your king away. Do that and you’ll reach a good middlegame every time.
🧠 Memory hook
Centre → Develop → Castle. Three jobs before you attack.
😂 Giggle
Why did the center squares get all the attention?
Because controlling the center gives every piece more room to work!
😲 Whoa!
Controlling the centre matters because a knight in the middle attacks up to eight squares, but a knight in the corner attacks only two.
✅ Quick check: In the opening, is it better to develop a new piece each move, or move your queen out early to attack?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Develop a new piece — an early queen gets chased around and wastes time.
Development and centre control build a strong position; a lone early attack usually just loses tempo.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Play the first four moves of a game aiming ONLY to: take a centre square, develop two pieces, and castle.
