Round 12 of 16

Defense & King Safety

📋 What it is

Castling tucks the king into a corner behind a wall of pawns; keep that pawn shield intact and watch for threats to your king every move.

🗣️ Coach says

Attack is exciting, but a safe king wins games. Castle early, keep the pawns in front of your king still, and always ask “is my king safe?” before you launch forward.

🧠 Memory hook

Castle early, keep the pawn shield, ask “is my king safe?”

😂 Giggle

Why did castling feel like a smart move?
Because it protects the king and activates the rook in one turn!

😲 Whoa!

Castling is the only move where you move TWO pieces at once — king and rook — protecting the king and activating the rook in a single turn.

✅ Quick check: You’re about to launch a big attack, but your king is still in the centre uncastled. What should you usually do first?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

In your next game, castle within the first six moves and then count how many pawns still shield your king.

🤸 Brain break: Castle up: build a “roof” over your head with both arms and say “king’s safe inside!”
