Round 13 of 16

Endgame Basics

📋 What it is

With few pieces left, the king becomes a fighter, passed pawns race to promote, and “opposition” (kings facing off) decides many king-and-pawn endings.

🗣️ Coach says

Games are often won or drawn at the very end. Activate your king, push a passed pawn toward promotion, and learn the opposition — small technique, big points.

🧠 Memory hook

Endgame = king joins the fight + push the passed pawn to queen.

😂 Giggle

Why did the endgame love active kings?
Because in the endgame, the king stops hiding and joins the fight!

😲 Whoa!

A single extra pawn, correctly promoted to a queen, is enough to win a game that looked completely equal — the endgame rewards precise technique.

✅ Quick check: In a king-and-pawn endgame, should your king hide in the corner or march up the board?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Set up king + one pawn vs a lone king and try to promote the pawn by walking your king in front of it.

🤸 Brain break: King wakes up: from a “sleeping” crouch, stand tall and “march” forward — “the king joins the fight!”
