About GardenPals

Engine-building — you grow a little machine so it produces more and more each turn — is one of the great modern board-game mechanisms. It usually starts at age 10 or older (Wingspan, Dominion) and hides the maths behind cards and coins. GardenPals brings it to ages 6–8, one band up from NestTots, with a concrete picture and a real choice: the more plants in Sorrel’s garden, the more blooms each watering gathers — and you choose which plant to grow.

Draw a hand, choose a plant

Each turn you draw three plant cards and plant one — a fennel 🌱 (+1), a clover 🍀 (+2), a rose 🌹 (+3), or a Sun ☀️. That first small decision — which plant grows my garden more? — is the step up from the fixed choices in NestTots.

The Engine Rule: every bloom traces to its plant

When you water, GardenPals shows where each bloom came from — 🌹 rose → 4, 🍀 clover → 3 — so a payout is never a mystery number. And a Sun adds one bloom to every plant, so growing a Sun early makes every future watering pay more. That’s a rule we hold across the whole library: a payout you can trace to the choice that caused it.

No losing (and no reward economy)

GardenPals has no timer, no streak, no score to chase, and nothing to buy. You can’t lose — the garden only grows, and the basket always fills in the end. The blooms are the engine’s output, a picture of the maths, never a currency.

Game weight (measured, not asserted)

We follow one rule across the library: a game’s weight is measured, never guessed. The pips below come from letting the computer play GardenPals hundreds of times and counting how many choices a turn it holds and how long a round runs — so a grown-up can pick by how much the child has to keep in their head.

What it’s good for (and what we don’t claim)

GardenPals is gentle practice for the intuition that the more you build, the more you get each time — the seed of multiplication and compounding — plus a first taste of a booster that lifts the whole engine. It is not a maths program or a brain-training app, and we make no claim it raises IQ or test scores.
