Playing GardenPals together 🌻
GardenPals is a build-a-garden game for ages 6–8. It’s the grown-up hobby of engine-building (think of games like Wingspan) shrunk to something a new reader can hold — and it does the one thing that unlocks the idea: you watch the garden grow and each watering gather more blooms. The big idea: the more you build, the more you get each time.
1 · Look at the garden
Sorrel’s garden starts with one clover 🍀, so the first watering gathers 2 blooms. The garden is always on screen, with “watering gathers N blooms” right beside it. Read it together.
2 · Guess, then water
Before watering, the child guesses how many blooms this watering will gather — reading the garden (predict-before-reveal, the single best-evidenced move in the app). Then tap Water the garden 💧 and see the blooms drop into the basket — and where each one came from.
3 · Choose a plant to grow (the choice that IS the lesson)
Now you draw three plant cards and grow one: a fennel 🌱 (+1), a clover 🍀 (+2), a rose 🌹 (+3), or a Sun ☀️. A rose grows the garden faster — but a Sun adds one bloom to every plant, so it pays off more and more as the garden grows. A first taste of “which choice grows my machine more — and does a booster beat a big plant?”
4 · The Engine Rule: trace the blooms
After each watering, GardenPals shows where every bloom came from (🌹 → 4, 🍀 → 3, and “☀️ +1 to every plant”). Payouts are never a mystery — the child sees the engine they built produce the result.
No timers, no streaks, no score to chase, and nothing to buy. You can’t lose — the garden only grows. The blooms are the mechanic (the garden’s output), never a reward economy. On-device — nothing leaves your device.
