For grown-ups
GrainQuest is a farming simulation with real trade-offs. Each of thirty seasons the player chooses local or high-yield seed, how much nitrogen fertiliser, and rain-fed or pumped groundwater. A deterministic model plays each season out against the same rain and price record for everyone, so runs can be compared fairly.
High-yield seed with fertiliser and irrigation grows more food, but it costs soil health, drains groundwater, sends nitrate into rivers and replaces local seed varieties. Local seed copes better in a drought but grows less. The end report shows all of it side by side with three named plans. There is no score and no single right answer.
Two real cases sit beside the game: the Green Revolution, and the scientists of the Leningrad seed bank. The model is a simplified teaching model, not a forecast.
