A warm old scriptorium study with an open book, a quill and ink, scrolls on wooden shelves, a teenager studying the shapes of an old script

How does the world write down sound? Seven writing systems make six different design choices — and with the right key you can read four of them today.

The six design choices

  • Alphabet — letters for consonants and vowels (English, Ukrainian, Vietnamese).
  • Abjad — letters mostly for consonants; readers supply the vowels (Arabic).
  • Abugida — each consonant carries a vowel that marks change (Hindi).
  • Syllabary — one sign per syllable (Japanese kana).
  • Featural alphabet — consonant shapes sketch the mouth; letters stack into syllable blocks (Korean).
  • Logography — signs mainly for words and meaning-parts, often with a sound hint (Chinese).

Each round mixes decoding with a few "why does it work this way?" questions. Wrong answers show which misreading you made — reading Cyrillic by its English look-alikes, or keeping a Hindi vowel the language drops. Nothing is timed, and nothing leaves your device.
