Elements of Art

📋 What it is

The elements of art — line, shape, colour, value, texture, space, form — are the basic building blocks of every picture.

🗣️ Coach says

Every artwork is built from a small set of pieces: line, shape, colour, value (light/dark), texture, space and form. Once you can name them, you can see how ANY picture is put together — and build your own on purpose.

🧠 Memory hook

Line, shape, colour, value, texture, space, form. The building blocks.

😂 Giggle

Why did the pixel go to the doctor?
It was feeling a bit washed out!

😲 Whoa!

Even the most complex digital artwork breaks down into these same few basic elements.

🖼️ Curate a “Building Blocks” hall — choose 4 elements of art to feature.

You're the curator. Choose 4 pieces, write a placard for each, then open your hall. There’s no single right set — curate with a reason.

0 / 4 chosen

A mark that leads the eye — straight, curved, thick or thin.

A flat, enclosed area — circle, square, organic blob.

Hue, plus how bright or dull it is; sets mood instantly.

How light or dark something is — makes things look 3-D.

How a surface looks or feels — rough, smooth, furry.

The area around and between things — near, far, empty.

A shape with depth — a cube, a sphere, a solid thing.

Before you open your hall, check your own work — no grade, just a curator’s eye:

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Look at any image and spot three elements of art in it (a line, a shape, a colour).
