🏃 Why the Outside Lanes Start Ahead

Each lane out adds 2π × 1.22 m to a lap of bends. Work out the staggers for 400 m and 200 m.

Why the outside lanes start ahead

A 400 m track has two half-circle bends: together, one full circle. Each lane is 1.22 m wide, so each lane out runs its circle on a radius 1.22 m bigger.

A circle’s distance around is 2π × radius. How much farther is one lap of bends in the next lane out?
