Kai's game that was too big
Kai, 16 — designing a game for a two-week class game jam
Kai's pitch: an open-world fantasy game with crafting, ten bosses, a story with three endings and online multiplayer. The jam is two weeks long and Kai is working alone.
Every feature is reasonable. Together they are a year of work for a team.
A small game that is finished and played teaches more than a big one that is half-built.
How should Kai scope it?
In the playtest, three of four players never notice the boss's warning flash before it attacks. What does Kai change?
Kai shipped a three-minute boss fight that everyone at the jam played twice. The open world is in a notebook marked "later".
