Matching Ends
📋 What it is
The core rule: you may place a tile only if one of its ends equals a number already showing at an OPEN end of the layout.

Dominoes is a matching game first. The line has "open ends" — the free number on each tip. To play, one end of your tile must equal an open end; you butt them together and now YOUR other end becomes the new open end. Every move both closes one number and opens another.

Because each move changes the open ends, planning one tile ahead — "what will I open for myself next?" — is what separates a beginner from a strong player.
✅ Quick check: The open end shows a 4. Which tile can you play there: 2|5 or 4|1?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
4|1 — it has a 4 to match; you play the 4, leaving a 1 as the new open end.
A legal play needs an end equal to the open number (4). The 2|5 has no 4.
