Drift Day

The hammer rang once. A spark jumped off the anvil and did not go out. It waited. They followed.

The ferry horn blew once. Lan and Beto were back on Gullwick.

The first span held. The second gap was still water.

"Seven planks this time," said Poppa Pike. "It's Drift Day."

The stick for seven was old. It was mended with wire. A tiny hammer was scratched by the wire.

The tide rolls like two dice. A plank lands in the patch with that number. Watch the patch, or the plank floats away.

"Seven! Six ways to make seven," said Lucky.

"I promise seven planks from seven!" said Lan. Everybody stood on seven.

A plank came on six. A plank came on eight. Nobody was there. They floated away.

"Count every way, not just the first one," said Dot. Dot laid out shells. Seven had six ways. Six and eight had five.

"Spread out along the hill!" said Petal. Beto stood on six. Lan stood on eight.

Plank! Plank! Plank! Now they had six.

One tide left. "Two never comes," said Lan.

"Not never. Just not often," said Twobble. He had waited on two all day.

Lan thought. Not often is not never. She ran to two and waited with him.

The tide rolled one and one. A plank! The wave pulled it back. Lan put her foot on it. Seven!

"Everybody lays one," said Poppa Pike. The last plank said LIKELY.

The ferry horn blew twice. Home.

The spark dimmed to a warm dot and settled back on the anvil. The Green was just the Green again.

Back on the Green

Tí rolled two dice. One and one!

"Rare is not never," said Lan.

The Honest Page

Which parts of this story are true, stretched or made up?

True

  • Two dice can land thirty-six ways. Seven can be made six of them, more than any other total.
  • Six and eight can each be made five ways. Two and twelve can each be made only one way.
  • Six, seven and eight together make sixteen of the thirty-six ways, nearly half.
  • The most likely total is not the total you get every time. A rare total still turns up sometimes. Source

Stretched

  • The twelve tides in this story were chosen by the writer. Seven came up three times. What we simplified: On a real day of twelve rolls, seven might come up once, or four times, or not at all; about twice is what you would expect.

Made up

  • Drift Day, the numbered patches and the talking beetles and snail are made up. Real tides do not roll dice.
