Across the Table
The story in three lines. Mittle the snowman has lost one mitten and feels sad. Tí wants to get a new one, but Mittle wants his own. Toppa looks on top and under, and Tuckaway looks behind and asks "in?", and Tí finds it tucked in a coat pocket with a hole for Bà Tư to mend.
The five nights. Night one, just listen. Night two, pause before the last word of each refrain line. Night three, stop at the guess page and ask where the mitten is. Night four, play the hide-a-sock game. Night five, let your child tell it to a toy.
One thing to do at the table. Take turns hiding a small toy and giving one clue: on, under, in, behind or next to. The finder looks in one place at a time and says where they are looking.
The grown-up layer. Position words are some of the first maths words children learn, and they help with following directions, reading pictures and building. Mittle names his feeling before anyone solves anything, which is worth copying when your own child loses something they love. WhereTots and PairTots play with these ideas.
