Cordy noticed that her club didn't fall apart over big things. It nearly fell apart over small ones left too long.

A borrowed marker not returned. A joke that landed wrong. A turn someone swore they'd been skipped. Tiny things — but with nowhere to sort them out, they festered. Two kids who'd squabbled over a marker in spring still weren't speaking by summer, and the whole club had picked sides, and nobody could quite remember what the marker even looked like.

"We don't need a courtroom," Cordy said. "We need a log."

So she rolled a smooth log into the corner of the clubhouse and called it the Talking Log. The rule was simple and cheap: if two people had a snag, they sat on the log together — with one calm friend to help if they wanted — and each got to say their whole side, uninterrupted, before anything was decided. No shouting, no crowd, no waiting weeks for a Big Meeting. Just: sit, speak, listen, sort it, done. Usually in the time it took the kettle to boil.

The magic of the log, Cordy found, was mostly in the listening. Half the fights melted the moment each side actually heard the other. "Oh — you thought I took it on purpose? I grabbed it by mistake, I'm so sorry." Snags that had looked like betrayals turned out to be muddles, and a muddle sorts out in a minute once both people feel heard.

And because the log was quick and easy and friendly, people actually used it. That was the whole point. "If settling a fight is a huge scary hassle," Cordy explained, "people avoid it, and the fight just sits there growing teeth. But if it's cheap — a two-minute sit-down, no drama — people bring their snags early, while they're still small and soft. Catch them small and they sort out sweetly. Leave them and they harden into something that splits the whole group."

The marker-feud kids finally sat on the log. It took four minutes. It turned out one of them had returned the marker weeks ago and the other never noticed. They laughed. They were friends by teatime.

Cordy gave the Talking Log a fond pat. "Give every fight a quick, fair, friendly place to land," she said. "Settling small keeps a community whole."
