Fairny

Her club shared a little boat for the pond. Someone had made a rule that sounded perfectly fair: everyone gets exactly thirty minutes, no more, no less. Neat. Equal. And completely wrong, as Fairny kept trying to explain.

"It's the same for everybody," the rule-maker insisted. "How could it not be fair?"

"Because we don't all use the boat the same way," said Fairny. She pointed across the pond. "Rell rows out to clear the weeds that choke the whole pond — that's work for all of us, and it takes an hour, not thirty minutes. And little Bram just wants to float near the dock for five. Thirty-thirty-thirty sounds equal, but it hands Bram time he doesn't want and cuts Rell off before the weeds are cleared. A rule can be equal and still not fit."

So the club sat down and made the rule fit. Weed-clearing trips got the time they truly needed. Floaters took short turns. Busy afternoons got a sign-up; quiet ones didn't bother. The new rule was messier-looking than "thirty each" — but it matched how they actually used the pond, and suddenly everyone stopped grumbling.

Then Fairny turned to the other half of fair, the half people forget. "It's not just about fitting how we play," she said. "It's about sharing the work and the fun fairly, together." She'd noticed that the same three people always scrubbed the boat and bailed the rainwater, while everyone enjoyed the rowing. That wasn't fair either — not because a rule was broken, but because the effort and the joy had drifted apart.

So the club shared out the scrubbing and the bailing along with the rowing. The people who put in the most weren't left doing all the dull bits for someone else's fun. Work fairly split, fun fairly split.
