At the quiet end of Gullwick, where the meadow slopes down to the lighthouse point, lives a heron named Anja. She wears a woven shawl the colour of sage, and she moves slowly, which fools people into thinking she isn't watching. She is always watching. Anja keeps the two things the island trusts her with: the Commons, and the Lighthouse. And both of them are for everyone.
The Commons is a simple, kind idea, and it is Gullwick's proudest habit. On a hard round — when a storm-tide floods a cove, or the dice of the day fall badly for someone — the islander with the most shares a little with the islander who has the least. Not because anyone forces it. Because that is how Gullwick decided to rebuild: nobody is left short. And here is the part Anja loves most, the part that makes her island different from harsher places: nothing is ever taken. No good is snatched, no cottage is knocked down, no one is robbed. Sharing means giving from the top of your own pile — the spare you can spare — so the one who's behind can catch up. The island only ever grows fuller. It never grows meaner.
"There's a kind of game," Anja told Piper once, as they trimmed the lighthouse wick together, "where you get ahead by taking things from other people. Knocking down what they built. Stealing their goods." She shook her head slowly. "We never play it that way here. Not because we're soft. Because it doesn't work. Take from the one who's already behind, and they fall further, and then they can't help you either, and the whole island gets poorer together." She tamped the wick down neat. "But share from the top of the full pile with the one who's short — and now they're back in it. Now they can build again. Now they can trade with you tomorrow. Everyone up. Nobody knocked down."
Piper thought about the islander who'd had the flooded cove that morning — how Anja had noticed before anyone else, and how a little grain had appeared at their door, quietly, from the fullest baskets on the island, and how by afternoon they were rebuilding and laughing again.
"You saw them before they even asked," Piper said.
"That's the whole job," said Anja, and her eyes went soft and warm. "Noticing who's short. Nobody should have to shout that they're behind." She lit the wick, and the great lamp caught, and its beam swung out across the dark water — steady, wide, for anyone out there who needed it. Not a light for the richest ship. A light for every ship. "Same as the Commons," she murmured, watching it sweep. "The light isn't mine. It's the island's. It reaches whoever needs to be reached."
That is how Gullwick came back after the storm and stayed together after: not by any single islander winning it all, but by the fullest quietly lifting the emptiest, round after round, until everyone was standing. The Commons kept the last cottage from failing. The Lighthouse brought the last boat home.
So the next time you're the one with the most — the most goods, the most turns going your way, the most of anything good — think of Anja. Look for whoever's short. Give from the top of your pile, never from the bottom of theirs. And feel how the whole thing grows warmer when the light is for everyone.
When the store is shared instead of stolen, no islander is ever left short — give from the top of the pile, and the light reaches everyone. That's Anja.
