At a workbench in the Grand Laboratory, a bright-eyed jay named Query sat with her head tilted, turning a big fuzzy wondering into a small sharp one — while a frustrated young hedgehog beside her had a question so huge he couldn't do anything with it at all.

Query was quick and curious, feathers always half-fluffed with interest, a little question-mark charm dangling from a ribbon at her wing. The hedgehog groaned over a plant on the bench. "I want to know WHY plants grow," he said. "That's my question. Why do plants grow?" He waited, as if the plant might answer. It did not.

"That's a lovely wondering," Query said, tilting her head, "but it's too big to ANSWER. 'Why do plants grow' — where would you even start? You'd need a hundred lifetimes." She hopped closer. "The trick is to shrink it into a question you can actually go and find out. Watch." She looked at the plant. "Does THIS plant grow taller when it gets MORE light? Now THAT — that's a question you can answer. Put one plant in more light, one in less, wait a week, measure. The big fuzzy 'why' becomes a small sharp 'does-this-do-that,' and suddenly you know exactly what to do." She tapped her question-mark charm. "A good question is where science starts — but only if it's a question you can actually answer. Not 'why is the sky?' but 'does the shadow get longer as the sun drops?' Sharpen the wondering until it points at something you can go check."

The hedgehog's spines settled a little. "So I don't start with the huge question... I start with a small one I can actually test?"

"You keep the huge one," Query said warmly. "It's your NORTH — the big beautiful wondering that got you interested. But you ANSWER it one small, sharp, do-able question at a time. A vague question goes nowhere. A sharp question tells you exactly what to look at, what to change, what to measure. The whole of science starts here: not with a guess, not with an experiment — with a question you can actually answer."

Query had once drowned in questions too big to hold.

When she was young, her head was so full of enormous wonderings — why does anything fall? what is the sky made of? how does everything work? — that she'd freeze, overwhelmed, never able to start, because every question was a whole ocean and she didn't know where to put a single toe in. She'd sit paralyzed under the weight of all that wondering, sure that science was only for creatures clever enough to answer the giant questions whole.

An old magpie, sharp and practical, landed beside her one afternoon. "You've got wonderful big questions," she said, "and they're crushing you, because you're trying to swallow the ocean in one gulp." She scratched a tiny mark in the dirt. "You don't answer 'why does anything fall.' You answer 'does THIS acorn fall faster than THAT feather.' One small, sharp, answerable question — and then another, and another. Each little answer is a stone, and you build the big answer out of the small stones over time." She tapped Query's charm. "Don't try to hold the whole ocean. Cup one small question you can actually answer, and start there. The giant wondering will still be waiting — but now you'll have a way IN."

Query learned to sharpen — to shrink her giant wonderings into small, answerable, go-and-check questions — and the paralyzing ocean became a set of stepping-stones she could actually cross. The overwhelmed, frozen feeling opened into a bright, ready focus. She'd never been too small for the big questions. She'd only been trying to swallow them whole, when she could have answered them one sharp sip at a time.

She walked to the Grand Laboratory when she was older, because a place that studied how things really worked ought to understand where the whole thing STARTS.

Smithy, the old badger who ran the lab, met her at the door. He didn't ask her to recite a rule. He set a covered lantern on the table, its light leaking faintly at the seams, and asked, "What do you want to know about this?"

Query didn't say how does light work — the ocean-question. She tilted her head at the leaking seams. "Does the light get brighter," she asked slowly, "if I open one seam wider? And does it reach FARTHER across the table when it's brighter?" She looked up. "Those I could actually go and find out."

Smithy uncovered the lantern and watched her. "Most kids ask me the biggest question they can think of," he said, "and then have nowhere to go. You asked me the smallest one you could actually answer. That's how science really starts. You belong here."

Her corner of the lab filled with kids stuck under questions too big to move — and one afternoon a young vole slumped, paralyzed.

"I have to do a science project," the vole said, "and my question is 'how does the weather work,' and I don't know where to even BEGIN. It's too big. I'm stuck."

Query knew that frozen, drowning feeling. She'd sat under giant questions for years.

"'How does the weather work' is a beautiful ocean," Query said gently, "and it's crushing you because you can't answer an ocean. Let's find one small sip of it you CAN answer. What's one weather thing you could actually watch or change or measure?" The vole thought. "...Um. Whether a puddle dries up faster in the sun than in the shade?" Query's feathers fluffed with delight. "THAT'S a question! Small, sharp, do-able. Two puddles, one sunny, one shady, measure them each day. You just turned an ocean into a stepping-stone." The vole blinked. "Oh — I don't have to answer the whole huge thing. I just answer one small piece I can actually check."

"That's the whole secret of starting," Query said. "The big wondering is your north — keep it, love it. But you get there one small, sharp, answerable question at a time. A vague question paralyzes. A sharp question hands you a plan."

The vole wrote down his puddle question, and his frozen slump lifted into an eager, ready lean.

Later, when the lab had emptied out, the vole came back with a quieter question — a small, sharp one, this time.

"When you turn a huge overwhelming question into a tiny answerable one," he said, "and suddenly you know exactly what to do — what does that feel like?"

Query considered it, tilting her bright head.

"Like a knot coming loose," she said. "When I was young and held only the giant questions, I felt this heavy, frozen, where-do-I-even-start dread — the whole ocean pressing down, and no way in." She tapped her question-mark charm. "But sharpening a question is the opposite feeling. You take the huge, crushing, fuzzy thing, and you shape it — smaller, clearer, sharper — until it points at ONE do-able thing, and suddenly the dread lifts and there's just... a bright, ready, oh-I-know-what-to-do-first feeling. Not overwhelmed. Not frozen. Focused." She fluffed her feathers. "There's a light, eager calm in a good question — the relief of a huge wondering shaped into a first step you can actually take. Clear. Pointed. Ready. That's my favorite feeling: not answering everything at once, but finding the one small, sharp question that finally lets you begin."

The vole nodded, and Query watched the frozen weight lift off him — the same bright, ready focus that had once, at a workbench long ago, loosened her own drowning under giant questions into a curious jay who could finally find her way IN, one sharp question at a time.
