Query and Because
QUERY asks the sharp question; BECAUSE gives the evidence-backed answer. Together — an inquiry is a loop: a good question at the start, and an answer at the end that actually ANSWERS it, with the evidence to back it. The answer must fit the question, or you never really closed the loop.

At a workbench in the Grand Laboratory, a young mole had done a whole big experiment and still felt oddly unfinished — and both Query the jay and Because the beaver came to sit with him, because between the two of them lay the whole shape of a question actually answered.
"I did EVERYTHING," the mole said, frustrated. "I asked a question, I ran the experiment, I got results — but it still feels like I didn't really finish. Like the ends don't meet. What did I miss?"
Query tilted her bright head, and Because settled her solid weight, and the two of them looked at each other the way partners do who hold the two ends of the same thread.
"Let's start where I start," said Query, tapping her question-mark charm. "What was your QUESTION — the sharp one at the very beginning?" The mole said: does a plant grow taller with more water? "Good — sharp, answerable. That's MY half. Every inquiry begins with a real question you can actually go and answer."
"And here's MY half," said Because, touching her keystone-charm. "At the END, what's your ANSWER — and does it actually answer THAT question, with evidence behind it?" The mole hesitated. "Well... I found the plant with more water grew mold." Because gently shook her head. "That's interesting — but it doesn't answer whether it grew TALLER. You asked about height, and answered about mold. The ends don't meet."
The mole blinked. "So my answer... doesn't match my question?"
"That's exactly the not-finished feeling," said Query. "A loop only closes when the answer at the end actually answers the question at the start."
"Ask a sharp question," said Because, "AND give it an answer that fits it, backed by evidence." She touched her charm; Query tapped hers. "The question and the answer are the two ends of one loop. If they don't meet — if you answer a DIFFERENT question than you asked — you've done a lot of work but never closed the circle."
"Ask what you can answer," they said together, "and answer what you asked — with the evidence to prove it. THEN the loop closes, and you've truly found something out."
The two of them had learned, each alone, that half a loop finishes nothing.
Query, when young, asked beautiful sharp questions — and then wandered off, never disciplined about actually answering the exact thing she'd asked, so her lovely questions dangled forever, unclosed. Because, when young, built solid evidence-backed answers — but often to whatever she happened to find, not to any clear question she'd started with, so her sturdy answers floated, attached to nothing asked. Each held one end of the thread and kept losing the other.
They'd run an inquiry together once, and the loop clicked shut. Query asked: does the ball roll farther on the smooth ramp than the rough one? — sharp, answerable. Because answered, at the end: yes — it rolled farther on the smooth ramp, BECAUSE we measured it going 40 centimeters farther, three times running. The answer fit the question exactly, and carried its evidence. "My question gave the answer something to aim at," Query had said. "My evidence gave the question a real reply," Because had said. And they understood: a question and its evidence-backed answer are the two ends of one inquiry, and the whole thing only closes — only truly finishes — when the answer meets the question it was asked.
They had walked to the Grand Laboratory within a season of each other, and Smithy, the old badger, meeting each at the door, had asked the same thing. He set a puzzle on the table. "Find something out about this. Then tell me."
Query had framed it: "I'll ask one sharp thing I can actually check." Smithy had nodded: "A real question."
Because had answered: "And I'll tell you what I found, and exactly why I believe it." Smithy had nodded: "A backed-up answer."
And when the two of them worked TOGETHER — Query framing the sharp question, Because closing it with a fitting, evidence-backed answer — Smithy smiled widest, because an inquiry that both ASKS well and ANSWERS what it asked is the only kind that ever truly finishes.
So when the mole's ends wouldn't meet, the two of them walked the loop with him.
"Go back to your question," said Query. "Does the plant grow taller with more water? Keep it exactly that sharp." The mole nodded.
"Now answer THAT question," said Because, "and only that — with evidence." Together they measured the heights. "The more-watered plant grew four centimeters; the less-watered grew nine. So the answer is: NO — more water did NOT make it taller; it grew LESS, because we measured it four against nine." The mole's eyes widened. "And the mold?" "A brand-new question," said Query, delighted, "for a brand-new loop! But this loop — height — is finally CLOSED, because you answered the exact thing you asked."
The mole looked at his question and his fitting, evidence-backed answer, meeting at last. "Oh," he breathed. "That's the finished feeling. I didn't just DO stuff — I asked a real question, and actually answered THAT question. The ends met."
"That's a whole inquiry," said Query. "A sharp question."
"And its evidence-backed answer," said Because. "Meeting in the middle. Loop closed."
Later, when the lab had emptied out, the mole came back with a quieter question — a sharp, closeable one this time — and found them both there, a closed loop drawn between them.
"When your question and your answer finally meet," he said, "and the whole thing clicks shut — what does that feel like?"
Query and Because looked at each other, and it was Because who answered first.
"Like a circle completing," she said, touching her keystone-charm. "For years my answers floated — solid, but attached to no clear question, so they never quite... landed. My half alone was an answer with nowhere to be."
"And my questions dangled," said Query, tapping her charm, "sharp and lovely and never closed, because I wandered off before answering the exact thing I asked. My half alone was a beginning with no end."
"Together, though—" Because looked at the closed loop.
"—there's a whole, finished, ends-meeting feeling," said Query. "Not the frustration of doing lots of work that never quite lands, and not an answer floating free of any question — but the deep satisfaction of a sharp question asked AND actually answered, with the evidence to prove it, the two ends clicking shut." She tapped; Because touched her keystone. "For years I had beginnings with no ends, and she had ends with no beginnings. Alone, each of us had half a loop."
"Together," said Because, "we close the whole circle — and there's nothing more satisfying in all of science than a real question, actually answered by real evidence, meeting in the middle. Whole. Finished. Truly found out. That's what neither of us could feel until we learned to hold both ends of the thread at once."
The mole nodded, and the two of them watched the unfinished frustration settle into a whole, complete calm in him — the same ends-meeting satisfaction that each had once found only by learning what the other knew, at a workbench that finally held both the sharp question and its evidence-backed answer at once, closing the loop.
