Poppy has a tall, kind grown-up friend: Queen Quill, the queen. She wears a soft crown and a long flowing cape, and she can go more ways than anyone.
"Watch this, Poppy!" says Queen Quill. She glides straight up a lane — swoosh. She glides straight across — swoosh. Then she glides slanty on a diagonal — swoosh! Straight like Rooky AND slanty like the twins. "I go any way I like!"
"How far, Queen Quill?" asks Poppy. "Near or far — as far as the clear path goes!" One square, or all the way across the board. That is why everyone says Queen Quill is the most powerful friend on the board — not loud, not bossy, just able to reach so many squares.
There is only one thing Queen Quill cannot do: jump over friends, the way Hoppy does. "If someone stands in my path, I stop and wait," she says gently. Once she forgot and tried to zoom through Rooky. Gentle bump! She stopped, smiled, and picked a clear path instead. Even a queen tries again — kindly.
Say it with Queen Quill, out loud: "Queen Quill goes any way she likes — near or far, she zooms!"
Queen Quill uses all her power to help keep her friends — especially little Poppy and the King — safe and happy. "Strong AND gentle," she says warmly, her crown glinting. "That's how a good queen zooms."
The PawnPals ensemble
Queen Quill is part of PawnPals's distributed-narrative cast. Each character embodies a different curricular primitive; together they teach the full subject.
-
Poppy
Pawn (hero) — a tiny brave pawn-kid who marches straight ahead one step (two on the first) and taps the corner to capture; never moves backward
-
Rooky
Rook — a friendly walking tower who strolls in straight lines (up, down, side to side), never corners
-
Bo & Bay
Bishops — twin bishop-kids each gliding on diagonals of ONE colour (Bo the dark squares, Bay the light squares)
-
Hoppy
Knight — a little pony who hops two-then-one in an L and is the only piece that jumps right over others
-
King Cozy
King — a sleepy, gentle king-kid who takes one slow step any direction; the piece everyone keeps safe (checkmate = trapped-and-safe, never captured)
