Bellow tapped a drum softly — a gentle pat — and drew a small circle, no bigger than a berry. Then he tapped it hard — BOOM — and drew a great wide circle that filled the slate. He was a plump pufferfish, orange and pale-gold and round as a beach ball, who could puff himself big or shrink himself small at will, his little fins fanning slowly. Beside him floated circles of every size, the shapes of loud and quiet sounds — not to say exactly how big a sound must be, only to show that loudness has a size.

He knew a loud sound felt enormous to some ears and only medium to others, and that a whisper might feel tiny to one friend and cozy-close to another, and every size was true. Loud wanted to be big, quiet wanted to be small — that much was shared — but exactly HOW big or small was yours.

He noticed someone lingering warily at the doorway, keeping their distance, and quieted everything down, patting the soft stool beside him.

Bellow had grown up in a coral cove, where his family were the size-feelers.

When he was small, loud sounds terrified him. A big BOOM would crash over him and he'd puff up hard and hide, sure that loud meant danger, that a big sound was a big threat coming to get him.

One quiet evening his oldest grandfather floated down beside him. "You feel loud as a big scary thing," he said gently. "And loud IS big — a loud sound really does feel bigger. But big isn't the same as dangerous, little one. A big drum, a big laugh, a big wave of music — big, and completely safe." He tapped a stone: a soft click, then a strong knock. "Feel the sizes. Small sound, small feeling. Big sound, big feeling. And you get to decide how close you stand to the big ones."

So Bellow let himself feel the bigness of a loud sound without deciding it was a threat. Big — yes. Dangerous — no. And when one WAS too big, he learned he could just step back and let it shrink. Something in his chest went loose and easy. He hadn't been silly to feel loud as huge. He'd only been believing that huge meant harmful. He never again thought a big sound was, by itself, something to fear.

When Bellow was twelve, he swam out of the cove and all the way to SynaForge.

Chroma, the old mentor, was waiting at the gate. "A loudness becomes a size," she said. "Tell me the shared part, and the part that's theirs."

Bellow thought of the sizes he'd learned to feel. "Loud wants to be big and quiet wants to be small — that's shared, everyone feels it," he said. "But exactly how big a sound feels, and how close you can stand to it, is different for every body, and every one is true. You help people feel the sizes without fearing the big ones — and you always let them step back."

Chroma's kind eyes crinkled. "Then come in," she said. "So many children arrive here overwhelmed by loud things, sure that big means bad. You'll show them big can be safe, and that they can always make it small." It was, Bellow always felt after, the biggest moment of his young life.

His workshop had thick soft walls that hushed the echoes, and a volume-dial by the stool. When a jumpy girl named Sol sat down, Bellow started with the quietest tap.

"Little sound first," he said, unhurried. "How big does it feel?"

Sol relaxed a touch. "...Small? Like a pebble."

"Perfect. Draw it small." She drew a tiny circle. He tapped a bit louder — "bigger, like an apple," she said, drawing a bigger one — and a little louder still — "like a plate!" — her circles growing, her shoulders loosening as she saw that bigger wasn't badder, just bigger.

Then he reached toward the loud drum, and Sol tensed, bracing.

"You're in charge of the big ones," Bellow said at once, hand hovering, not striking. "We only go as loud as YOU want, and never by surprise. Want to try a medium one, from far back? Or keep it small today? Or turn the dial down to almost-nothing?" Sol chose medium, from across the room, hands ready to cover her ears — and when it came, she'd been the one to allow it, and it was big but not frightening. "See," Bellow said softly. "Big, and safe, and yours to control."

When they'd finished, Sol looked at her circles, small to large, and then at Bellow. "So loud isn't automatically scary. It's just... big."

"Just big," Bellow said, fins fanning happily. "And you always get to choose how close you stand, or make it small again. Don't let anyone tell you a big sound is a big danger. Feel its size, decide for yourself, and step back whenever you need."

A warm, glad feeling rose up through Bellow's round chest, gentle as a slow tide in the cove. Watching a kid who flinched at every loud thing learn she could hold the dial herself — that was the real treasure Bellow carried, and it made his whole soft heart feel full and quietly, deeply content.
