Rasp ran a soft paw slowly across a strip of tree-bark, and in his ears a low, gravelly grumble rose up — the sound of rough. He was a plump catfish, cream and slate-grey and plush as a cushion, not a bit slimy, with gentle whiskers that fanned out to feel the world. Strapped to his side rode a little board of surfaces — bark, moss, glass, wool — not to say what each one is supposed to sound like, because there is no such thing, but to offer a place to begin.

He touched the smooth glass next, and a clear high hum floated up instead. Rough grumbled; smooth sang. But he knew the same bark might grumble for him and whisper for somebody else, and glass might ring for one friend and hush for another, and every one of those was true. Whatever sound rose up when you touched a thing — that one was yours to keep.

He felt someone hesitating in the doorway and set the bark down softly, patting the squishy stool beside him.

Rasp had grown up in a slow river-bottom, where his family were the feel-listeners.

When he was small, the riverbed confused him. His cousin would brush a stone and murmur, "Hear that? This one's a bright little ting," and Rasp would touch the very same stone and hear only a stone. He was sure there was a correct sound hiding in it that everyone could find but him.

One dim evening his oldest uncle drifted down beside him. "You're reaching for my ting," he said kindly. "But my ting isn't in the stone. It's in me. Stop hunting for the right one, little one. Just touch, and go quiet, and tell me what rises in you."

So Rasp let his whiskers rest soft against the stone without grabbing at it. And after a moment, all on its own, a warm rounded thrum floated up — nobody else's, only his. Something in his chest went loose and easy, the way a held breath lets go underwater. He hadn't been failing. He'd only been reaching for someone else's answer. He never again believed a texture had one secret sound everyone had to find.

When Rasp was twelve, he swam to the river's edge, climbed out, and walked all the way to SynaForge.

Chroma, the old mentor, was waiting at the gate. "A surface becomes a sound," she said. "Tell me where the true sound lives."

Rasp thought of the thrum that had risen up on its own. "In whoever's touching," he said. "Every surface has a sound — but it's a different one for every pair of hands. There's no correct one to hand out. You just help people trust the sound that's already theirs."

Chroma's kind eyes crinkled. "Then come in," she said. "So many children arrive here having been told their senses are wrong. You'll be the one who tells them their senses are simply theirs." It was, Rasp always felt after, the biggest moment of his young life.

His workshop was cozy — soft moss walls, glowing mushrooms, a basket of textures by the stool. When a quiet boy named Fen sat down, Rasp offered him the wool first.

"Touch it slow," he said, unhurried. "What sound floats up?"

Fen frowned. "I don't... what's it supposed to be?"

"There's no supposed-to," Rasp said gently. "Just tell me what rises."

Fen closed his eyes, stroking the wool. "...A soft shush?" he whispered, like a confession.

"Beautiful," said Rasp. "Some people get a hum from wool, or a purr, or nothing. Your shush belongs right beside all of them." He offered smooth pebble — Fen said "a little bell" — then knobbly bark — "a growl," louder now, sitting straighter with each one.

Then Rasp reached for the wire-brush, and its bristles were sharp and scratchy, and Fen flinched, pulling his hand back fast.

"That one's a lot," Rasp said at once, softening his voice and setting it away. "If a texture feels too much on your skin, you never have to sit in it. We put it away, or you just picture a soft one instead. Your hands matter more than any game. We listen to what your body says."

When they'd finished, Fen looked at his sounds — shush, bell, growl — and then at Rasp. "So none of them were wrong."

"Not one," Rasp said, whiskers fanning happily. "Three surfaces, three sounds, all yours. Don't go searching for the right one. There isn't one to find. Whatever rises when you touch — that's the surface's sound, for you."

A warm, glad feeling rose up through Rasp's whiskers, soft as a current crossing the riverbed. Watching a careful kid uncurl like that, watching his eyes go bright the moment he trusted what he felt — that was the real treasure Rasp carried, and it made his whole plush chest feel full and quietly, deeply content.
