Real cases

Two of the ideas you practise, meeting in one real situation. Choose, see what actually happens, then reflect.

A case · you decide

Renewal and Cancel read the free trial

Renewal & Cancel — a 16-year-old signing up for a music-app free trial

The idea in play: an auto-renewal keeps charging unless you cancel by the deadline, so find how to cancel before you start.

The trial is free for 30 days, then $12.99 a month. The terms say it renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end, through account settings.

Renewal: it keeps charging until you act.

Cancel: the notice period, the deadline, and the method.

Arbitration and Redline read the phone plan

Arbitration & Redline — a 17-year-old reading her first phone contract with a pen

The idea in play: an arbitration clause can waive your right to sue or join a class action, and some contracts let you opt out within a window.

Deep in the plan's terms: disputes go to private arbitration, customers waive class actions, and "you may opt out of arbitration by written notice within 30 days of activation."

Arbitration moves any dispute out of court and gives up joining with other customers.

Redline's habit is to mark every clause and look for the exits the contract itself provides.
