At Rove's workbench sat a little robot in a cluttered maze of blocks, and Rove — a plump homing pigeon with a map-pouch and a keen eye — was teaching it the difference between wanting to reach the goal and knowing how to get there.

His whole craft is navigation — finding a path through the world. "Everybody thinks getting somewhere means heading straight at it," he said, cooing. "And a bad robot does exactly that — points its nose at the goal and drives forward — until it smacks into a wall." He set the robot loose; it aimed straight at the goal and rammed into a block, wheels spinning uselessly. "See? It wanted to get there. It just didn't know how. Wanting isn't a plan." He spread his map. "Navigation is knowing the goal and finding a real path to it — around the wall, through the gap, along the clear route — even when that path curves away from the goal before it curves back." He traced a winding line around the blocks. "The shortest straight line is often blocked. The shortest real path goes around. A good navigator doesn't just face the goal and shove. It maps what's in the way, finds a route through, and follows it — even when the first step is sideways."

Rove learned that lesson the day he flew straight into a canyon wall.

He was young and impatient, and his nest was just across the canyon — a straight line away. So he flew straight at it. Into a sheer rock wall. Again and again, sure that trying harder to go straight would somehow work.

His grandmother, an old pigeon with a well-worn map-pouch, found him bruised and stubborn.

"Home is RIGHT THERE," young Rove said, pointing straight through the solid rock. "Why can't I get to it?"

"Because 'right there' and 'reachable' aren't the same thing, little one," his grandmother said gently. "Home is straight ahead — and straight ahead is a wall. Flinging yourself at the wall harder won't move the wall." She led him up and along the canyon rim. "But look — go this way, away from home for a bit, and there's a gap. Through the gap, around the ridge, and home is easy. The path that reaches home curves away from it first." She tapped his beak. "That's navigation. The goal tells you where you want to be. But the path tells you how to actually get there — and the path almost never runs straight. It bends around the walls. A navigator who only knows how to go straight at the goal is stuck at every wall. A navigator who can find the way around gets home from anywhere."

Young Rove never flew straight into a wall again. He learned to lift up, see the whole map, and find the path — even when the first wingbeat pointed away from home.

He flew to RoboForge at twelve, because a place that built robots ought to teach them to find their way, not just their want.

Servo, his mentor, met him at the workbench. "How does a robot get somewhere?"

Rove didn't answer with a speech. He set a robot in a maze with the goal in plain sight behind a wall. The first robot (no navigation) drove straight at the goal, hit the wall, stuck. Then Rove's robot: it scanned the maze, found the open path (which curved away from the goal, through a gap, then back), and followed it — reaching the goal by going the "long" way that was actually the only way. "Same goal," Rove said. "The first one aimed at it and got stuck. Mine found a path to it — around the wall, even though the path bent away first. A goal you can see isn't a goal you can reach. You need the path."

Servo watched the robot wind its way home. "You are appointed," he said.

At Rove's workbench, he taught navigation with a block-maze and a robot. First he showed the naive way: "aim at the goal, drive forward" — stuck at the first wall. Then he taught the robot to map: sense the walls, find the openings, plan a route through the gaps, and follow it — accepting that the route sometimes led away from the goal to get around an obstacle. Then he gave the working rules: reaching a goal takes a path, not just a direction — knowing where you want to be is useless without a route through what's in the way; the shortest straight line is often blocked, so the real shortest path usually curves around obstacles, sometimes heading away from the goal before heading back; and a good navigator maps the obstacles first and plans a route, instead of driving blindly at the goal and getting stuck. "A student's robot 'just kept ramming the wall between it and the target,'" Rove cooed. "Because it only knew the goal, not the path. We taught it to see the walls and find the gap — even when the gap led sideways — and it started reaching goals it could never reach by shoving straight ahead. The goal tells you where. The path tells you how. And the how is almost never a straight line."

"So reaching a goal isn't about going straight at it," a student said slowly. "It's about finding the path around what's in the way?"

"Find the path, not just the goal," Rove agreed, and he settled on his perch and unrolled his well-worn map, tracing the winding, around-the-walls routes that always, eventually, led home — content in the deep knowing that no wall could truly trap him, because there was always a path, if he lifted up and looked for it. There was a warm, resourceful happiness in it — the settled gladness of a pigeon who had stopped battering himself against walls and learned to find the way around them, who knew that a goal blocked by a wall was never a goal lost, only a goal that needed a cleverer route. It made him feel free, and capable, and calm. That find-the-way-around, the-path-curves-before-it-reaches, no-wall-can-trap-me warmth — the resourceful gladness of a creature who could always find home — was, to Rove, the quiet confidence hidden inside navigation. "The goal tells you where," he said softly, tracing his map, "but the path — the winding, around-the-walls path — tells you how."
