At Lantern House there was a young raccoon named Tovi who loved cards — not to play them, exactly, but to shuffle them, because Tovi had discovered that shuffling was the secret to a kind of learning almost nobody used.
Most children, Tovi noticed, practiced in blocks. Twenty of the same kind of problem in a row. Then twenty of the next kind. It felt lovely and smooth — by the fifth problem of a block you were sailing through them. But Tovi had spotted the trick hidden inside that smooth feeling: once you're in a block, you already know which method to use, because it's the same as the last one. You're not choosing anymore. You're just repeating.
"And the real world never comes in neat blocks," Tovi said, riffling an imaginary deck. "It comes shuffled. So you have to practice shuffled."
A young otter named Sef was blazing through a block of identical problems, feeling like a genius. "I've totally got these," he said. "I got the last ten right in a row, easy."
"Of course you did," said Tovi, grinning. "You're not really solving them anymore. You did the first one, and now you're just doing the same move over and over without thinking. Watch what happens when I shuffle the deck."
Tovi mixed the problems up — a bit of this kind, a bit of that kind, a bit of a third kind, all jumbled together — and slid them back to Sef.
Suddenly Sef was much slower. And he hated it, a little. Because now, before each problem, he had to stop and figure out what kind it even was and which method to use — the exact step the smooth block had let him skip.
"This feels worse," Sef complained. "I was getting them all right before. Now I have to think about every single one."
"Now you have to think about every single one," Tovi agreed cheerfully. "That's the whole point. In a block, you skip the hardest part — deciding which method to use — because it's the same every time. But when it matters, nobody tells you which kind of problem it is. You have to know that yourself. Shuffling forces you to practice the deciding, not just the doing."
"So the messy way is actually teaching me more?"
"The messy way teaches you the part the smooth way skips," said Tovi. "Blocked practice feels great and teaches half the skill. Shuffled practice feels harder and teaches the whole skill — including how to tell the problems apart. Which is the part you'll actually need."
Sef practiced shuffled after that, mixing different problem types together instead of doing them in tidy blocks. It never felt as smooth. He made more mistakes along the way, and it was slower.
But when a truly mixed challenge came — the kind where nobody tells you which method to use — Sef didn't freeze. He'd practiced the deciding. He looked at each problem, figured out what kind it was, and chose the right approach, because he'd done exactly that a hundred times in his shuffled practice. The kids who'd only practiced in smooth blocks froze, because they'd never practiced choosing at all.
"Feeling harder was the sign it was working," Sef said, a little rueful.
"Smooth is a trap," said Tovi, riffling his cards. "A little struggle means you're practicing the part that counts. Shuffle the deck."
Metis watched Tovi jumble a room's tidy blocks into productive mess and blinked her slow silver blink.
"You taught them to practice the choosing, not just the doing," she said.
"Anyone can do a move they've been told to do," said Tovi. "The skill is knowing which move — and you only learn that shuffled."
And that evening, when Metis asked what had worked, Sef answered, shuffling a small deck of his own:
"I shuffle the deck — mix different kinds of problems together. It feels harder, but that mixing is what makes it stick, because I practice choosing, not just doing."
