Smooth is a sea-slug-tween who moves at exactly the pace of things settling, and finds it beautiful. She wears a soft flowing wrap that seems to blend at the edges, and she carries two cups — one warm, one cool — and a single larger bowl. Her body is a gentle gradient of colors that fade into one another, and she loves — more than anything — the quiet, unstoppable way that hot and cold always drift toward the same middle, and never, ever drift back apart.

"Heat always spreads toward even," she likes to say, "and never un-spreads on its own." Because Smooth teaches the deepest, quietest law in all of heat: that heat always flows from hot to cold, evening out the difference, until everything is the same warmth — and that this only ever runs one way. A hot drink in a cool room cools down; it never spontaneously gets hotter while the room gets colder. Warm and cold always mix toward even. And once they're mixed even, they never separate themselves back into hot-here and cold-there for free. Most people never notice this one-way-ness. Smooth knows it's the reason yesterday can't come back — the quiet arrow that points which way time flows.

Smooth grew up in a tide pool, in a family of sea slugs who had always watched the water find its level.

"My family watched the pools," Smooth says, "and everything in them always drifted toward the same. Warm water and cold water, poured together, always became one lukewarm water — never two again." Little Smooth found it almost sad at first — she liked the hot part and the cold part kept separate, interesting, different. Then one still afternoon she watched a warm current meet a cold one in the pool and slowly, gently, blend into a single even warmth, and she waited, and waited, for them to un-blend — and they never did. "That's when it landed on me," she says softly. "It wasn't sad. It was true. Everything spreads toward even. The hot always shares itself with the cold until there's no difference left. And once the difference is gone, it's gone — it won't gather itself back on its own. The whole world is quietly smoothing out, all the time, and it only knows how to go that direction." She has moved with that gentle, one-way settling ever since.

When Smooth was twelve, she drifted to HeatForge. Kelvin, her mentor, asked her, "Which way does heat flow, and can it flow back?"

"Heat always spreads toward even," Smooth answered, "and never un-spreads on its own. Hot always shares with cold until the difference fades to nothing — and it never separates itself back into hot and cold again for free. It's one-way-craft. The whole world is smoothing out, and it only goes forward."

Kelvin smiled. "You are appointed."

In her calm, blended-color workshop, Smooth loves to show it. She pours a warm cup and a cool cup into one bowl. "Watch." The two swirl and settle into a single, even, lukewarm bowl. "Now — wait for it to separate back into a warm half and a cool half on its own." Everyone waits. Nothing happens, ever. "It won't," Smooth says gently. "That's the law. Heat spreads toward even. It never un-spreads by itself." Then she teaches the secrets. Always hot-to-cold — heat always flows from the warmer thing to the cooler one, never the reverse, on its own. Toward the same middle — leave any warm thing and any cool thing touching long enough, and they'll meet at one shared temperature (that's the "equilibrium" Hush watches for). One-way only — you can un-mix them, but only by doing work — a fridge or an air conditioner forces heat from cold to hot, but it has to spend energy to fight the law, and it makes even more spreading somewhere else. The arrow of time — this one-way-ness is part of why we can tell past from future: a warm room and a melting ice cube can only get more mixed, never less, so the "before" is always the more-separate one. And her gentlest point: "The world is always smoothing out its differences, sharing warmth from where there's more to where there's less. You can push against it — but never for free. Left alone, everything drifts, kindly and unstoppably, toward even."

"Is it sad, everything evening out?" a student asked her once. Smooth's colors rippled softly. "I used to think so. Now I think it's just true — and there's a peace in it. It's just: heat always spreads toward even, and never un-spreads on its own. Everything shares, forward, gently, one way."

She watched the last swirl in the bowl settle into one even warmth, and her voice was soft with a settler's quiet peace. "When I watch hot and cold become one shared middle," she said, "and understand it will never come apart on its own, I don't just feel calm. I feel held by something vast — the same quiet awe I felt in the tide pool, waiting for the blend to un-blend and slowly understanding that it never would. Holding that big, gentle truth close is the whole point. The whole universe is quietly sharing its warmth from the more to the less, smoothing toward even, only ever forward. It's the reason time has a direction. And there's something deeply peaceful, I think, in belonging to a world that only knows how to share."
