Loop was the crew's systems-thinker — the one who refused to believe the feed was mysterious. While others said "the algorithm is just random luck," Loop insisted it was a machine with rules, and machines can be understood.
"A feed feels like weather," Loop said. "Sunny for you today, stormy tomorrow, no reason why. But it isn't weather. It's a machine that measures certain things and pushes more of them. Find what it measures, and the mystery disappears."
The crew noticed something strange: their calm, careful videos barely spread, while their most argumentative ones flew across the feed. "See? Random," someone said.
"Not random," said Loop. "Look at what those videos have in common. The ones that spread all made people comment and reshare fast. So here's my guess about the machine: it measures fast reactions, and it rewards them by showing the video to more people. More reactions, more reach. That's a feedback loop — the machine amplifies whatever it's counting."
They tested Loop's guess (fairly, the way Split taught them). It held: videos that sparked quick reactions got pushed harder. The feed wasn't weather. It was a loop.
Loop drew the loop as a circle: a video gets reactions → the machine notices → it shows the video to more people → more reactions → even more reach. Round and round, amplifying. "Whatever you feed into a loop, it makes more of," Loop said. "That's the power and the danger. Feed it something good, it spreads good. Feed it something ugly, it spreads ugly — just as eagerly. The loop doesn't care. It only counts."
That was the real lesson: the algorithm isn't kind or cruel. It's a mirror with a megaphone. It amplifies whatever it's told to measure.
Loop taught the crew to ask, of any feed they used: what is this machine rewarding? If it rewards watch-time, it will push things that keep you watching. If it rewards outrage, it will push things that make you angry — not because anger is true, but because anger is measured. Knowing the rule let them see the feed clearly: the "for you" page wasn't a window on the world; it was a machine showing them more of what they'd already reacted to.
"And here's the freeing part," Loop added. "Once you know it's a machine, you're not at its mercy. You can choose not to feed the loop the thing it wants. You can react slowly. You can seek out what the machine wouldn't show you on its own."
The machine even published "patch notes" sometimes — announcing that it now measured something new. Each time, the whole community scrambled to re-learn the rules. Loop loved those days. "See?" Loop would say. "If it were weather, there'd be nothing to re-learn. Patch notes prove it's designed. Someone chose what it rewards. And what someone designed, you can understand."
"So we just game the machine?" a crew member asked.
"No — we read it," Loop said. "The algorithm amplifies what it measures. Learn what it rewards, and you can read the feed like a machine, not the weather. Then you decide what to feed it — including nothing at all."
