The Study Coaches (full ensemble)

The coaches gathered. And what happened next was every lesson of Lantern House, braided into one real study session.

"First, me," rumbled Otis, "before you touch a single fact — because you can't study while you're drowning in I'm going to fail." He steadied the shaking hedgehog. "You might not ace it. That's true. But 'I'll fail' is a locked door. 'I'll learn the most I can in the hour I have' — that's a door with a handle. Say the second one." Milo said it, and could breathe again.

"Now me," said Pilar, sliding over her paper. "We do not study 'all of it.' That's the monster. We find the pieces. What are the few most important things this test will ask?" Together they chunked the impossible whole into a short stack of stones.

"And me," said Spry. "Not an all-nighter — those turn your brain to fog and you know it. We work in sprints. Full focus, short burst, real break, come back. Two good sprints beat five foggy hours."

Then came the learning itself, each coach handing Milo their one tool for the stones that needed it.

For the hardest facts he simply had to hold, Mnemo built him ridiculous, unforgettable pictures, and Indie sketched quick diagrams so words and images both carried the load. For the ideas he had to understand, not just hold, Cael made him explain each one in his own words, and Lumi turned every fuzzy definition into a real example he could picture, and Rune tied each new thing to something Milo already knew so it had somewhere to stick.

"And when you practice it," said Reeva, firmly, "you do NOT just re-read your notes — that only feels like studying. You close the book and reach for it. Struggle to recall it, then check. Reaching is what makes it stick, even tonight."

"Mix the kinds up while you practice," added Tovi, shuffling. "Don't drill one type ten times — jumble them, so you practice choosing the right approach, the way the test will make you."

Halcyon the tortoise, who could not un-cram the lost weeks, gave Milo the one honest thing he could. "I can't fix tonight," he said gently. "Spacing had to happen over the last three weeks, and it didn't. But hear this, so next time is different: if you had done a little of this every few days, this whole panic would never have existed. Tonight we rescue. But the real lesson of tonight is don't do this again — space it out, and you'll never need a rescue."

Milo nodded, and meant it.

And through all of it, Metis stood a step back, doing her quiet job — not teaching a skill, but orchestrating them: "You understand this one — good, move on. You're just recognizing that one, not recalling it — back to Reeva. You're fogging — Spry, break. This one's a memory job — Mnemo. This one's an understanding job — Cael." Picking the right coach for each moment, so Milo never wasted a minute of his precious hour on the wrong tool.

Milo studied until it was time to sleep — and Metis made him sleep, because a rested brain remembers and a wrecked one doesn't. He walked out calmer than he'd walked in. Nothing about the test had changed. Only he had — panic swapped for a plan.
