Novo and the Paper Lantern

Novo made a paper lantern once for a school project and has carried one around ever since. When it’s switched on, a soft round glow spills out of it, and Novo holds it up above their head like an idea arriving.

“There are always at least three options,” Novo says. “The two everyone is shouting about, and the one nobody has said yet.”

The Little Lamp Theatre has a tradition: at the end of each season, the young company votes on where to go for the cast party. This year the vote split exactly down the middle. Half wanted a picnic in the park. Half wanted pizza at the restaurant on the corner. They voted three times and got the same tie every time.

Novo sat in the middle of the room and felt frustration buzzing in their arms. Everyone kept arguing about the same two choices, round and round, louder each time. It was like watching people push on either side of a stuck door.

So Novo stood up and switched on the lantern.

“Can I ask everyone something?” they said. “Picnic people: what do you actually want from the party?”

“Being outside,” somebody said. “Running around. Not being stuck in a room.”

“Pizza people?”

“Pizza,” said someone, and everyone laughed. Then: “And not freezing. Last year’s picnic got rained on.”

Novo held the lantern a bit higher. “So we want outside, and running around, and pizza, and not getting rained on.”

The room went quiet while people thought about it.

Then Gamut said slowly, “The park has a bandstand. With a roof.”

“And the pizza place delivers,” said someone else.

You could feel the whole room change. The two halves that had been pushing on the stuck door suddenly turned round and started building something together. The party ended up in the park, under the bandstand roof, with pizza delivered, frisbees, and a speaker for music. It rained for twenty minutes in the middle, and nobody minded at all.

That’s what a third option is. It isn’t splitting the difference or taking turns. It’s stepping back from the two plans on the table and asking what each side really needs, and then inventing something new that gives them both more than either plan could.

Novo is honest that third options don’t appear by magic. They come from asking good questions, listening carefully, and being willing to let go of the first idea you liked. Sometimes you look for a third option and there isn’t one, and then a split, a trade or a turn plan is the best you can do. That’s fine too.

But Novo always looks first. They hold up the paper lantern, glowing gold.

“What’s the option,” they ask, “that nobody has said yet?”
